The court system can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate on your own. That's why Family Violence Project provides court advocates. They're ready to help you identify and sort out your choices and guide you through the legal system.
If you're a victim of domestic violence, our advocates will
- Provide support and objective knowledge and information about domestic violence and the legal system.
- Make sure you know your rights and remedies under Maine law, including but not limited to information about protection from abuse orders, domestic violence criminal charges, and employment leave for victims of domestic violence.
- Provide the information and support you need to feel empowered and well able to choose your own options and make informed decisions.
- Guide you through court paperwork, attend court with you when possible, and help you prepare for the court process.
Court advocates can also provide referrals if you need further legal assistance, work with law enforcement on your behalf, and provide support for your ongoing safety planning.
